Gadhu Gathering

Celebrating Dharawal Culture and Rugby League

In August 2025, the Gujaga Foundation proudly partnered with six Sydney-based NRL clubs to deliver Gadhu Gathering. A landmark three-day cultural celebration held at Allianz Stadium during the NRL’s Indigenous Round.

The word gadhu, meaning “large body of saltwater”, reflects the spirit of coming together. This event brought thousands of fans, players, and community members together to honour Traditional Owners through sport and culture.

Artwork and Animation

Gadhu Gathering was visually anchored by a stunning artwork created by community artist Shane Youngberry, which symbolised connection to water, land, and people. This artwork was brought to life by Studio Gilay, who transformed it into a dynamic animation projected onto the stadium and played across screens inside Allianz Stadium and throughout promotion for the event.

Strengthening Connection to Country

Gadhu Gathering was a powerful statement of respect and cultural pride. This collaboration helped ensure that Dharawal language and culture was front and centre.

At Game 1, hosted by the Sydney Roosters, our people showcased the La Perouse Aboriginal community through a fantastic performance by the Gamay Dancers, a warm Welcome to Country, and Smoking Ceremony for those on-field. These experiences set the tone for the weekend and highlighted the Traditional Owners of coastal Sydney.

We thank our partners at the NRL, participating clubs, Studio Gilay, Shane Youngberry, Venues NSW, and the NSW Government for supporting this initiative. We look forward to continuing to build platforms that celebrate and strengthen our culture.
